Dental Implants: 3 Parts to Restore a Smile

Permanently restoring a missing tooth takes just three components: a dental implant, an abutment, and a custom restoration. Take a look at how they work together.

  • Dental Implants: These small prosthetic tooth roots are made of durable titanium. They are surgically anchored in the jaw via the gums, where they actually fuse to the bone tissue over the course of a few months. This is what makes them the stablest treatment option.
  • Abutments: Abutments are even smaller titanium connector pieces that secure the final restorations to the dental implants. They use a screw mechanism to ensure the restorations never come loose when eating or speaking.
  • Restorations: These custom-made artificial teeth are the only part of the dental implant system visible above the gums. They're just as strong as the real thing and are shade-matched to blend with the rest of your smile.

Dr. Harrison Explains How Dental Implants Work

The team at Harrison Dental Group in Fort Wayne can replace missing teeth using dental implants and restorations like a crown, bridge, or dentures. The titanium posts fuse to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration and give the jawbone much-needed stimulation to prevent bone atrophy. Implants provide support and stability to your dental restoration so you can eat and speak with confidence.

Do I Qualify for Dental Implants?

Wondering if implants are the right choice for you? The first step is to visit one of our Fort Wayne locations to speak with a dentist. During your initial consultation, we can use our advanced 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) machine to take detailed scans of your jaw and determine whether you can currently undergo implant placement. One of our doctors will also sit down with you to discuss your medical history, as well as your goals, needs, and budget.

Good candidates for dental implants:

  • Are in Good Oral and Overall Health

  • Have Sufficient Jawbone Density

  • Can Safely Undergo Implant Placement Surgery

  • Do Not Smoke or Are Willing to Quit

Certain conditions, such as gum disease and jawbone atrophy, can interfere with your ability to receive implants, but our team can provide treatment for these conditions, allowing you to experience the life-changing benefits of an implant-supported restoration.

A Look at Our Sedation Options How We Keep Dental Implant Patients Comfortable

Sedation is not required during dental implant surgery, and many patients are kept fully comfortable with local anesthesia alone, but sedation can provide that all-important peace of mind needed for pain-free and stress-free treatment if you deal with dental anxiety. Take a look at the options we offer:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas. It's administered through a nose mask and takes effect within just a few minutes. You'll remain conscious but feel relaxed and "light" throughout your implant procedure. The effects wear off quickly once the gas stops flowing, so you'll be able to drive yourself home from the office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is administered in the form of a pill taken about an hour before surgery. Your dentist will prescribe it ahead of time. It will keep you deeply relaxed during treatment—you may even fall asleep. The effects wear off more slowly than nitrous oxide, so you'll need a loved one to drive you home afterward.

Your Implant Treatment Timeline

The timeline for implant treatment can vary based on your unique dental needs. Factors that can affect the timeline include preparatory treatments, individual healing time, and the number of implants you need. Generally, restoring your smile with advanced procedures like dental implants takes several months to complete, but the end results are well worth it.

We stay up-to-date with the latest dental technologies like 3D surgical guides so we can plan treatments as accurately as possible.
We stay up-to-date with the latest dental technologies like 3D surgical guides so we can plan treatments as accurately as possible.

Consultation

At your initial consultation, your dentist can give you an estimated timeline so you have a better idea of what to expect. We will also take 3D scans to precisely plan your procedure. Your dentist will examine you and determine if you are a candidate for implants, whether you need preparatory treatments before implant placement, and which restorative option is best for you. We pride ourselves on customizing treatment to fit your budget.

Preparatory Dental Procedures

The first step is receiving any preparatory procedures, such as dental treatment for gum disease or grafts to replace lost bone tissue. Not all patients will require these preparatory treatments.

Surgery

Once you have healed from any preliminary treatments, one of our implant dentists can perform your implant placement at one of our Fort Wayne offices. During the procedure, he will make a small incision into your gum tissue and embed the implant posts (which are made from titanium) into your jaw. We use surgical guides to help ensure accurate and quick placement of your implants. The procedure is relatively quick and patients can expect less post-operative pain than an extraction.

Final Restoration

It typically takes three to six months to heal from implant surgery. When you have fully healed, our dental team can attach a custom crown, bridge, or denture to your implants for a fully restored smile.
Each of our four Fort Wayne offices features professionals who are deeply experienced in restoring our patients' smiles with implants. Reach out to learn how you can benefit from our care.

State-of-the-Art Surgical Guides Ensure Precise Implant Placement

Our dental practice uses 3D X-rays to create custom surgical guides. This allows us to pinpoint the very best spot for your dental implants.

We Will Keep You Informed Book a Consult for a Custom Quote

Frequently Asked Questions

Do implants hurt?

We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during implant placement. We also use advanced technology that makes treatment more comfortable and recovery faster. It's normal to experience some mild discomfort after implant surgery, but it's often easily managed with over-the-counter medications. However, your dentist can prescribe pain medication if you need it.

How long do implants last?

Implants are made from high-quality titanium and, with proper care, are designed to last a lifetime. The longevity of restorations varies based on the materials used, but most can last ten years or even longer. Our dentists will explain what you can expect during your consultation.

I am missing most of my teeth. Aren't traditional dentures a cheaper option than implants?

Traditional dentures are a great option for some patients. However, traditional dentures do not stimulate new bone growth in the jaw and can actually hasten the deterioration of the jawbone. Dental implants, which are prosthetic tooth roots, are the only restorative dentistry treatment that can stop the bone atrophy that occurs following tooth loss. While traditional dentures might be a cheaper option up front, investing in dental implants now can save you time and money later.
