What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Tooth Diagram

Our teeth are made up of multiple layers. Many of us are familiar with the outer white portion of our teeth called the enamel. This dense, mineralized layer protects the more sensitive inner layers of our teeth. Within the enamel is a less dense layer called the dentin. Dentin provides structure and support for the tooth. Within the dentin is the pulp chamber, which contains blood vessels and nerves. The pulp chamber includes the centers of the tooth roots, known as the root canals.

Dental decay

When trauma, infection, or advanced decay reaches the pulp, a serious dental problem known as a root canal infection can result. Bacteria causes infection once it reaches the pulp, and most patients require emergency care to prevent the loss of the tooth or the further spread of infection. Properly trained dentists like our professionals in Fort Wayne can provide a root canal, saving you the trouble of seeking out an endodontist.

The Root Canal Process Explained by Dr. Keith Harrison

Root canal therapy (endodontic treatment) can relieve pain and save an infected tooth from extraction. Following the root canal procedure, the tooth is capped with a dental crown. For most patients, Harrison Dental Group can typically complete a root canal in just one visit.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

There are multiple benefits to undergoing this form of dental procedure, especially when performed at one of our Fort Wayne, IN, offices. The most obvious advantages are the treatment of pain associated with the diseased inner pulp and the restoration of your oral health, but there are other benefits as well. Once bacteria reaches the sensitive inner portion of a tooth, the bacteria can spread quickly.

Protect Your Oral & General Health

Once bacteria reaches the sensitive inner portion of a tooth, the bacteria can spread quickly. Bacteria can even penetrate the jaw bone or reach other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Although rare, untreated root canal problems can lead to life-threatening complications. This is one reason why our team considers root canal problems as emergencies that must be treated immediately.

A Conservative Procedure

Root canal treatment can also preserve your natural teeth. A successful root canal procedure can help you avoid the need for a dental extraction, which requires a dental implant or another more costly form of restorative dentistry to remedy. Preserving natural teeth is a priority for our dentists. By reporting oral pain and other symptoms of a root canal infection early, you can improve your chances of preserving your teeth.

Comfortable, Effective Treatment

To ensure our patients enjoy the very best results from root canal treatment, we use the latest technology favored by endodontists, or specialists in treating issues of the dental pulp. Some of our preferred tools for root canals include durable, precise files to remove damaged tissue and needle-free local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. By working with the skilled and experienced team of Harrison Dental Group, you can rest assured you are in good hands.

What if My Tooth Couldn't Be Saved? Implant Dentistry Can Transform Your Smile

Our dentists will do everything possible to save a tooth that has a root canal infection. However, there are some cases in which a tooth is too compromised to be saved, even with root canal treatment. If you lost a tooth due to a root canal issue, there's no need to worry. Harrison Dental Group offers a range of implant dentistry services that can restore your appearance, your dental function, and your oral health after tooth loss.

Feeling Nervous About Your Root Canal? We Offer Sedation Dentistry to Keep You Comfortable

Contrary to popular belief, there is minimal pain associated with the root canal procedure, and most patients can remain comfortable throughout with just local anesthesia. However, we understand that having sensitive teeth and gums, difficulty sitting still for extended periods, or general dental anxiety can make you nervous about undergoing the procedure. This is why we offer multiple sedation options to our root canal patients.

In addition to local anesthesia, you can choose to receive nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Both of these options induce a state of deep relaxation and can help your procedure fly by in total comfort. You can request a consultation to learn more about the benefits of sedation and how it can fit into your treatment plan by contacting our Fort Wayne practice online or by calling:

The Root Canal Treatment Timeline

If you're having a toothache, you don't need to rush to find an endodontist. Our dentists can determine if a root canal is the right procedure for you. Here's what you can generally expect during treatment:

Treating a root canal infection is a relatively simple process. We will likely be able to complete your treatment in just one visit.

Day of Procedure

Treating a root canal infection is a relatively simple process. We will likely be able to complete your treatment in just one visit.

Numbing the Treatment Area

Before the procedure begins, the treatment area will be thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia. Sedation is also available to you if you choose.

Entering the Tooth

Your dentist will create a small opening in the crown of your tooth in order to access the nerves and blood vessels within.

Clearing the Infection

The infected tissue will be gently removed through the opening in the crown of your tooth. If your root canal infection has caused a dental abscess to develop, we can address it at this step.

Sanitizing and Sealing the Tooth

Once the inner chamber of your tooth has been completely cleared of pulp, it will be sanitized and filled with a rubber-like substance that replaces the pulp and helps maintain the structural integrity of the tooth.

Crowning the Tooth

Depending on the complexity of your case, you may need a dental crown to protect your tooth from further infection and provide structural support. We can make you a custom dental crown that looks, feels, and functions just like the real thing.

What to Expect After Your Treatment

Dental Patient

Following treatment, your dentist will provide you with detailed recovery guidelines that are to be followed closely. Most discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter medications. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled by our office, and we encourage all patients to report the sudden onset of discomfort during your recovery period.

In rare cases, a root canal treatment may fail. In that case, tooth extraction may be the only way to restore your oral health. A dental implant placed shortly after your tooth extraction can prepare you to receive a dental crown. An implant replaces a lost tooth through the surgical placement of a titanium post in the jawbone.

How Much Does Root Canal Treatment Cost?

Root canal treatment typically costs between $700 and $1,200 per tooth at our locations in Fort Wayne. Treatment is unique for each patient, so your final costs may vary depending on the complexity of your case and whether you received sedation.

Because root canals are medically necessary, your dental insurance provider will likely help to cover the cost of your procedure. We accept many insurance plans and can work with your provider to help you maximize your coverage.

If you are uninsured or need help covering your out-of-pocket expenses, there's no need to worry. We also offer several in-house financing options and third-party financing through CareCredit®. You can secure a loan with little or no interest and a manageable monthly payment plan.
