Tooth Extraction

Is a damaged, decaying, or impacted tooth causing you pain? Is your oral health suffering due to an infected tooth? Advanced decay, trauma, impaction, and other dental problems are often best treated with tooth extraction. Our dentists at Harrison Dental Group in Fort Wayne, IN,  perform virtually painless extractions and provide many replacement options.

Don't Let an Injured Tooth Cause Serious Oral Health Issues

A seriously injured, decaying, or impacted tooth can lead to further health issues that can affect your jawbone and surrounding teeth. When this happens, it will require more extensive dental work. Tooth extraction is a quick, simple, virtually painless procedure that can prevent the need for more expensive dental care. Our Fort Wayne, IN, dentistry practice has four locations to serve you. Contact the office nearest you to see if a simple tooth extraction is what you need to eliminate your oral pain.

Benefits of Dental Extraction

We often think of tooth extraction as a last resort but the removal of a damaged tooth can open the door to a wide range of restorations and procedures, including orthodontics or the placement of one or more dental implants. Following the extraction procedure at our Fort Wayne, IN dental practice, patients can benefit from:

Improved Comfort

Many patients come to our Fort Wayne dental practice in severe pain due to advanced decay, a root infection, abscess, or other complication that requires extraction. While you may think of tooth extraction as an unpleasant experience, many patients enjoy relief from oral pain following the straightforward procedure. In fact, a 2009 study published in the International Endodontic Journal found 54 percent of root canal patients experienced no pain at all. Our doctors will take great care to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your treatment and can often provide same-day treatment

Restored Oral Health

Many of the dental problems that lead to the need for this procedure can place the health of your mouth in jeopardy. Left untreated, many of these issues would advance to the point where serious and invasive treatments are required. A root canal infection can spread to the jawbone, for example, if the molar is not treated using root canal therapy or extraction. Following this form of dentistry, you can enjoy restored oral health and peace of mind.

Preparation for Orthodontics

Most people don’t think of dental extraction as part of orthodontic dentistry but crowding can complicate orthodontic treatments. If you have multiple overlapping or crowded teeth, the safe and gentle removal of even one tooth can prepare your teeth for effective and discreet Invisalign treatments. These clear aligners gently move your teeth into the proper alignment through micro-movements.

Are You in Dental Pain? We Can Help

/

If you come to our office in need of an extraction, we will do our very best to extract your tooth and eliminate your pain on the same day. Our experienced dentists can extract your tooth, relieve your pain, and replace extracted teeth as needed with a variety of solutions. Contact our Fort Wayne practice today.

Dangers of Postponing the Removal of a Damaged Tooth

An infected, impacted, or severely decayed tooth can compromise the health of your entire mouth. For example, wisdom teeth are more prone to decay than other more accessible teeth, and the position of an impacted wisdom tooth can lead to dental crowding, abscesses, swelling periodontal disease, and other concerns.

If you have been told by your dentist that you require the removal of wisdom teeth or any other teeth, we recommend undergoing that procedure at our Fort Wayne dental clinic as soon as possible so you can enjoy improved oral health and a lower risk of complications.

Tooth extraction is a quick and simple procedure that can prevent the need for more invasive and complex dental work in the future.

Anesthesia

First, one of our dentists will administer local anesthesia to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue so you do not feel discomfort during the procedure. Patients can also request sedation.

Extraction

Once you are comfortable, one of our dentists will begin the process of removing the tooth. If it is impacted, this may require incisions. Next, They will use a special tool to gently loosen and extract the tooth. Molars may need to be separated into smaller pieces in order to be safely removed.

Gauze & Sutures

Once the tooth is removed, any incisions will be sutured and gauze will be placed over the extraction site to control bleeding. You should change out the gauze as needed following your procedure. Following your procedure, a blood clot will form.

Recovery

Recovery usually takes a few days, and most patients are able to resume work the next day as long as their job does not involve strenuous duties. You will be provided with detailed recovery guidelines that should be followed closely.

Feeling Anxious About Tooth Extraction? Contact Our Fort Wayne, Indiana, Practice To Learn How We Can Help

At Harrison Dental Group, your comfort is our priority. That is why we provide sedation dentistry for patients who suffer from dental phobia or have difficulty sitting comfortably for long periods. If you are anxious about your upcoming appointment, you can choose between nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedatives, which we provide in addition to a pain-blocking local anesthetic. Our experienced dentists minimize discomfort during every procedure, but when a patient needs more than local anesthetic to become comfortable, sedation dentistry can provide significant benefits.

Replacing Extracted Teeth We Have Several Options

While wisdom teeth do not need to be replaced, other teeth may leave your smile imbalanced and prone to oral health issues following extraction. We offer several solutions to replace extracted teeth:
Dental Bridge

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge can be an ideal solution for patients who are missing one or multiple consecutive teeth. The false teeth can be anchored to nearby teeth using dental crowns, or supported by dental implants.

Dentures

If you are missing most or all teeth in either dental arch, we can provide a full or partial denture. Traditional full dentures are supported by a combination of a mild adhesive and suction. We also offer implant-supported dentures for exceptional stability.

Implant-Supported Restorations

Prosthetics can also be supported by one or more implants. For example, if you are seeking a solution for a single missing tooth, a titanium implant can support a custom dental crown. Implants don't just make replacement teeth as stable as natural teeth; they also promote jawbone strength and prevent bone atrophy.
